Fire prevention is the first
line of firefighting. It is the most effective, the most efficient, the
least painful, and the least expensive.
Fire
Safety Education is the cornerstone of prevention. Most people who have
died as a result of fire were dead before a call for help was ever
transmitted. Responding Firefighters, no matter how well trained and
equipped, could not have saved them. But they could have easily saved
themselves by prevention and proper immediate action.
We have provided instruction
to more than 30,000 children since the inception of the Fire & Life
Safety Division. Each of these children needs to know and practice Fire
Safety and Burn Prevention. Our Fire Safety and Burn Prevention Program
includes: smoke house, fire safety and burn prevention, stop-drop and
roll, exit drills in the home (EDITH), fire station tours, apparatus
demonstrations, friendly Firefighter, presentations on fall prevention,
CPR and first aid, fire extinguisher use, proper placement and
functioning of fire and smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and home
inspections. These services are available to the community and schools,
pre-school,
day
care centers, church and civic groups, scouting organizations, and
special events.
The Fire Marshal conducts
plan reviews and inspections of commercial and industrial buildings, and
investigates fires as needed. Shift personnel also conduct annual
inspections of businesses and preplanning. Requirements are based upon
the International Building and Fire Codes and the National Fire
Protection Association Standards.
