October 16, 2011 - B Shift Responds to Possible Structure on Camp Rd.
Battalion Chief Jeff Armstrong and the entire B shift responded to a possible structure at Smoky Oak Taproom on Camp Rd shortly after 8 pm. Upon arrival, smoke was showing from the rear of the bar on the outside. Also responding were the City of Charleston Fire Dept, Charleston County EMS, Rescue 301 and Charleston County Sheriff's Dept.
The cause of the fire is believed to have been a grease build-up in the smoker used to cook their meats. There was minor extension that was quickly knocked down by the crews. Damage was minimal and the restaurant reopened. No injuries were reported. Additional photos are located in our photo gallery. |
October 13, 2011 - Fire Prevention Expo Huge Success

The fun continued with an auto extrication demonstration around 7 pm. JIFD Captain Jimmy Harder led a 6 member team of highly trained individuals to perform the exercise in using the "jaws of life." A repeat session occurred around 8 pm. The extrication team members pictured below include (front row, l to r) Firefighter George Stoner, Captain Jimmy Harder, Firefighter Will Roper (back row standing) Engineer Josh Fridley, Engineer Elliotte Limehouse, Captain Matt Logan and Firefighter Chris Fugee.

The Lowes parking lot was packed with fire and emergency apparatus the entire evening. Fire trucks, ladder trucks, JIFD Fire Safety House, ambulance, Sheriff's vehicles, JIPSD Wastewater trucks.... you name it, we had it.
On right, St. Johns Fire Department Captain James Ghi led an interactive demonstration on proper use of a fire extinguisher. Expo attendees could experience the real feel of a fire extinguisher and practice putting out an acutal fire. They learned the P.A.S.S. method - pull, aim, squeeze, sweep.

October 4, 2011 - Commissioner Platt's Annual Trip to Post Office for Breast Cancer Awareness Stamps Includes "Mary" This Year
James Island Public Service District Commissioner Eugene Platt made his traditional October stop at the Folly Road US Post Office to purchase breast cancer awareness postage stamps. Commissioner Platt lost his wife Mary to breast cancer in 2003. He purchases the stamps every year. Shift B Battalion Chief Jeff Armstrong and Engine 801 were present along with "Mary", a 1987 Spartan engine that was donated by the District and JIFD to Pink Heals Guardians of the Ribbon. The engine is named Mary in honor of Mr. Platt's wife.
October 3, 2011 - Shift A Captain Harder Receives EMT Certification

Shift A Captain Jimmy Harder, a JIFD member for 9 years, recently completed a 144-hour EMT course at Low Country EMS. He spent an additional 20 hours "ride time" on an ambulance to complete all requirements to be certified. He received his EMT certification on October 3rd. Congratulations Captain Harder!
October 1, 2011 - JIFD A Shift Responds to Structure Fire on Ft. Johnson
A Shift Battalion Chief Richard Rodgers and his crews responded to a structure fire on Ft. Johnson Rd at approximately 12:30 am on Saturday morning. Upon arrival heavy smoke and fire were showing. JIFD was assisted by the City of Charleston, St. Andrews Fire Department and Charleston County EMS. The home was occupied at the time of the fire but everyone got out safely due to working smoke alarms which woke them up. This is another example of the importance of functioning smoke alarms in the home.

September 6, 2011 - Jeff Armstrong Joins JIFD as B Shift Battalion Chief
Jeff Armstrong joins JIFD as Shift B Battalion Chief. He comes to us from California where he spent many years in the firefighting industry and served as a State Fire Instructor. Jeff and wife Christy had visited Charleston many times and fell in love with it.
Jeff will be in training until October 1st when he will begin full shifts as Battalion Chief. Welcome to the JIFD family! We look forward to working with you!

July Project - Station One Training Room Gets a JIFD Extreme Makeover

July 9, 2011 - B Shift Responds to Structure Fire on Clark Sound Circle
B Shift led by Chief Richard Rodgers filling in for Chief Rhoton, responded to a structure fire on Clark Sound Circle, Saturday July 9th. The home was fully involved upon their arrival. Crews from the City of Charleston and St. Andrews Public Service District also responded.
A disabled man was pulled from his bedroom window by two men, one of whom was an off duty Mt. Pleasant firefighter, before responding units arrived. The home was severely damaged and the next door neighbor's home suffered damage from the radiant heat.

June 16, 2011 - JIPSD Commissioner Eugene Woodall Passes Away
It is with great regret that we report the passing of Gene Woodall on June 16th. Woodall, a retired JIFD Battalion Chief, was serving as a James Island Public Service District Commissioner. He worked tirelessly for this District and the Department. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service was held on June 21, 2011. Our condolences to the entire Woodall family. God Bless.

June 2, 2011 - C Shift Responds to Structure Fire on James Prioleau
Chief Tom Glick and JIFD Engines 804, 803, 802 and Ladder 801, along with City of Charleston Chief and their Engine 113, Tower 105 and St. Andrews Fire Dept rescue unit responded to a two-story fully involved house fire at 1732 James Prioleau around 1:30 am on June 2nd. Photos show the destruction caused by this fire that the Charleston County Sheriff's office has ruled was arson. Crews were on scene until approximately 7:00 am. There were no injuries.
January 23, 2011 - Shift C Responds to MVA with Entrapment
Details are sketchy and the cause of the accident is unclear, but a passenger vehicle involved in an accident on Riverland Drive, Sunday evening January 23, 2011, landed on its roof and Shift C along with City of Charleston, Charleston County Rescue and Charleston County EMS worked for approximately 30 minutes extricating a passenger.
